2012 Shagging with the Stars

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2012 WINNERS – CHRISTIE TURNER AND JONATHAN TOMPKINS

The NSDC started “Shaggin With the Stars” several years ago to get the local Myrtle Beach community more involved in the NSDC and raise money for the Beth Mitchell Scholarship. Local “stars” and community leaders are paired with professional shag dancers and given only 12 hours of practice time before competing at NSDC Prelims each January. The contestants are judged 2/3 by shag dance judges and 1/3 by audience applause.  If you would like to participate as a “star” next year, please call Barry Thigpen at 843-222-6706.

Introducing our 2012 contestants…

In the upcoming days the 2012 “Shagging with the Stars” contestants will be revealed two-by-two on our website.  When the final two competitors are named their professional instructors/partners will be revealed.

#1 – Marla Branson of WMBF News

A meteorologist with WMBF News, Marla is originally from Stuttgart, Arkansas.  She is a graduate of Ole Miss and grad school alumni of Mississippi State.  She loves to play golf, go on “staycations” on the Grand Strand and is learning to surf from her husband Michael Walter.

#2 – Scott Brown of Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The General Manager of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans since February of 2010, Scott has a long baseball history.  His dad was the Baltimore Orioles public relations director for 35 years.  Graduating from the University of Maryland, he has spend the last 30 years in minor league baseball.  He is a great ambassador for the sport.  Scott and wife Rebecca have four daughters – Mandy, Sydney, Abigail, and Victoria.

#3 – Lisa Robertson-Schmittle of the Myrtle Beach Police Department

A member of Myrtle Beach’s finest for over eleven years, PFC Lisa is an integral part of their street patrol.  Originally from Huntington, West Virginia, she enjoys the beach, boating, and motorcycles.  She is also a huge Marshall University fan.  The mother of two sons, and a soon to be grandmother in October.

#4 – Rev. Jonathan Tompkins of First United Methodist Church

Born and raised in NY, he is a graduate of the State University of NY at Genesco and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.  A former middle school teacher and youth minister he was ordained last June as minister in his third year at the First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach.  He and his wife Rebecca have a son and are expecting a daughter in December.  He likes all kinds of music, running on the beach, and reading.  His father-in-law, Doug Neal, played with Bob Meyer & the Rivieras who recorded the beach music hit “Behold.”

#5 – Tony Dennis of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department

Originally from Dayton, Ohio and a huge Cincinnati Redlegs fan, he has lived in Myrtle Beach for over 3 years.  Completing some early in life bucket list items, he has become a fireman, completed culinary school, next will be to earn his pilot’s license.  Tony is single and likes photography, working out, and of course cooking.

#6 – Christie Turner of RE/MAX Ocean Forest

Originally from Boise, Idaho, Christie moved to the Grand Strand in 1991.  This is where she met and married her husband Tracy who also sells real estate.  They have two sons, Nick & Nate, who she considers her hobby when not working.  She has done work with Bethany Christian Services and has been active in PTAs serving as vice president and was secretary of the Relief Society.

#7 – Diana Greene of Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce

A magna cum laude graduate of USC, Diana and her husband Stephen are both high profile in the tourism industry of the Grand Strand.  A native of Salisbury, NC she is very involved in her daughter Ashlyn’s school – Myrtle Beach Elementary.  She likes to travel, read, scuba dive, and zip line.  She also has three stepsons – Benjamin, Thomas, and Mason.

#8 – Maurine Cahill Butwin of Nibils

From a family of five siblings, Maurren is the manager of her family’s restaurant “Nibils” in Myrtle Beach.  She and husband Richard have an eighteen month old, Helena, and are expecting number two in June.  When not working she enjoys family, friends, church, and shopping.  A Myrtle Beach High School graduate, she attended Coastal Carolina University.

#9 – Jessica Worley of the OD Resort & Beach Club

A Little River resident and lifelong native to the area, Jessica graduated from Coastal Carolina.  Jessica along with her dad Harold and siblings HG & Lindsey own and operate the Ocean Drive Beach & Golf Resort in North Myrtle Beach, SC.  She is an active member of the community currently serving as Executive Chair of the Festivals & Events Committee for North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.  Jessica is an avid barrel racer and is a member of AQHA, SCQHA, NBHA, and BFA.  Her involvement with 94.9 The Surf allows her to take an active role in the preservation of Beach Music & the Shag.

#10 – O’Neil McCoy of Broadway at the Beach

A true native of Myrtle Beach, O’Neil McCoy is General Manager of “Broadway at the Beach.”  He is a graduate of Myrtle Beach High School and was a member of the state championship tennis team.  He has a BS and Masters degree from Clemson University.  He likes golf, tennis, and spending time as a newly wed with wife Jewell.

#11 – Rhett Graham of Wells Insurance Company

A commercial insurance account executive with Wells Insurance Company.  Rhett is a native son of Myrtle Beach.  Married last April to April, he is a Coastal Carolina University graduate having played on the golf team and then professionally.  His hobbies include:  sports, traveling, reading, music, & following CCU sports.
