The National Shag Dance Championships have announced that their 30^th competition will be held at the Spanish Galleon in North Myrtle Beach. The preliminaries will be held on January 25^th and 26^th (including “Shagging with the Stars” on Friday and the 3^rd National Collegiate Championship on Saturday) with the finals on March 7^th, 8^th and 9^th 2013.

This is the second time the Spanish Galleon has been the site of the contest. In its thirty year history six locations have been used including the Myrtle Beach Pavilion and Studebakers. Over $17,000.00 in cash and prizes will be awarded to the participants.

Mistress of Ceremony will be television personality, Diane DeVaughn – Stokes for her twenty-fifth year of hosting and returning from Atlanta disc jockey for the dancers will be Dee Jay Hall of Famer, Tom Hamrick.

Renowned Nascar artist, Stephen Balok will design the cover of the official 30^th Nationals program. Mr. Balok is also the first entry as one of the 2013 “Shagging with the Stars” contestants for January.

The contest during its tenure has received much recognition including two California-based awards naming it the “Best Swing Event in the USA”. Their dance team has won over twenty competitions awards from Los Angeles to New York. Celebrities who attended, entertained or presented awards include: Academy Award winner Robert DuVall, 50’s singing sensation Fabian, and the legendary “Shierells”, Entertainment tonight’s Nancy Humphries Odell, “Shag the Movie’s” actors Annabeth Gish and Tyrone Power Jr., America’s Got Talent’s “All That” and Steve Gatlin of the “Gatlin Brothers”.

Meet the 2012 Program Cover Artist – Steve Balok

Meet this year’s NSDC program cover artist – Steve Balok. Steve was born and raised in North Carolina and started taking his Art career serious just after high school when his talent caught the eye of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. The popular driver took Stephen under his wing and jump started his career by introducing him to Jr Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt Inc. Other teams followed suit as artist Steve Balok was soon creating art for the top teams in the sport. Steve has created personal works of art for Dale Jr including 50 ft mural for his Downtown Bar Whisky River along with numerous works of art at Jr’s home in Mooresville NC. Currently Steve is the official artist for the NASCAR Hall of Fame and has recently been selected to create the 50th anniversary Bristol Motor Speedway program cover. Steve and his wife Carey are active in the shag community and love classic rhythm & blues. When approached by NSDC, Steve jumped at the chance to design the 2012 National Shag Dance Championship program cover – which the NSDC hopes is the first of many more covers to come.
