The Board of the National Shag Dance Championships got the idea a few years ago to try and get more young college aged folks interested in the SC State Dance while raising money for a good cause. The idea was to select one couple from as many local colleges as possible and pair them up with a Pro Shag Instructor who would teach them a few free shag lessons so that they could represent their school and compete in a fun shag dance contest to be held during the National Shag Dance Championships Preliminaries in January.
The National Shag Dance Championships Collegiate contest is a charity fundraiser for the Beth Mitchell Memorial Scholarship (click scholarship link above to go to our scholarship page and learn more) The first National Collegiate Shag Dance Championship was held at “2001 Night Club” on Saturday night, January 29th 2011. Six colleges and universities entered for the bragging rights to the title. NC State, UNC Charlotte, University of SC, The College of Charleston, East Carolina University, and Coastal Carolina University. Only one couple from each college were allowed to compete and the couples had no previous shag experience.
If you know of a couple who would fit the bill and be interested in dancing in our 2013 contest, please call Barry Thigpen at 843-222-6706 for further information. Both male and female must be attending their by the date of the event and they can not be circuit competitors by having entered any major shag contests. They will dance to a record of at least one and a half minutes, may have a professional instruct them and there is no entry fee.
